Ground support equipment is essential for rocketry.
You need a launch pad and launch controller to launch your rockets from. You also need wadding (or re-usable options) to protect your parachute each time.
We recommend the durable Klima launch pad and their launch controllers let you install two PP3 9v batteries at once for some extra launching juice! The Klima pad can take a 3mm or 6mm rod as well as a launch rail if required for larger rockets.
The estes pads are also great and the Porta pad E is very good for mid sized rockets also.
Bulk packs for schools and clubs
You can shop for bulk packs of rockets here. We list the packs of rockets on their own with bundles on the page so you can add everything you need in one click.
The bundles include motors, launch pad(s), launch controller(s), batteries and wadding. All you will need to run your club or rocket workshop will be the required tools and consumables for construction. Rocket manuals are on each page so you can check but in general with these starter kits you will likely need the following although not all of these are required by all kits.
Some wood glue (We like gorilla glue but all sorts of PVA should be OK).
Scissors, masking tape, sand paper, decorating supplies (pens etc).
The best way to get started in model rocketry is go grab one of our starter sets. We offer sets that are ready to fly so it's easy to get started and experience rocketry, or sets that you have to build first and learn a bit more about rocketry before you fly. We include the motors, recovery wadding and batteries with our starter sets. Most sellers don't usually include these items in their starter sets by default so make sure you check when comparing to see the value that we offer.
You can find out more on our starter sets page here.
You can also put together your own kit from any of our Ready to fly, E2X, or Easy skill rockets to start.
You will also need a rocket launch pad, launch controller, batteries, recovery wadding and rocket motors to fly your chosen rocket kit.
The only thing we don't include on our starter sets are any construction supplies you might need. Typically this will be PVA wood glue (maybe plastic cement on some models), sand paper, a pencil, ruler, masking tape and paint if required to finish your rocket.
Our building set A is a handy purchase.
We also sell a great 10 sheet sand paper pack.
Our store is packed full of amazing rocketry gifts for all ages and skill levels. If you still can't decide though we also offer both email gift vouchers and physical ones that we can post to you. You can find our gift vouchers here.
If your looking for someone that is new to rocketry then our starter sets are the best place to start. These include everything you need to get flying without worrying about anything being missing. Check out our starter set page here to find out more and pick a set.
If you're looking for ideas for someone who has already had a starter set, they may appreciate a slightly more complicated set from the medium skill level kits, or challenging skill level kits. You may want to add some rocket motors too that suit the chosen rocket. The best way to pick these is to see what the rockets description advises as suitable motors and then pick those from our store. Or you may want to consider an altimeter so flight data can be recorded and reviewed later. The Jolly logic altimeters are a pretty decent choice!
If the person you're buying for is also into electronics we have a collection of rocketry electronics kits too.
There are plenty of ways to upgrade your rocket. Cameras, altimeters, flight computers, improved parachutes and many many more choices.
One of the most popular upgrades or optional accessories for your rocket is a altimeter. We have quite a few choices here. Jolly logic altimeters are easy to use and reliable, or if you want to solder up a kit yourself then check out the Eggtimer rocketry kits. Head on over to our altimeter category to browse through the choices.
If you want to take a video from onboard your rocket then a video camera can be worth acquiring. Estes offer the universal AstroCam which can be attached to pretty much any rocket. Here are a selection of video cameras.
A rocket tracker is also an excellent upgrade. Not only will many show you loads of information about your flight but you can also be sure you'll find your rocket again! Many are also coupled with flight computers which can offer plenty of additional functions for your mission. The Fluctus & Steady blue tracker / computer is one of our favourites with an incredible range and loads of features.
If you have a model rocket with a plastic parachute or streamer, you may notice that after a few launches the parachute may be a little worse for wear! Nylon chutes are a great choice for upgrades with this regard. Check out hundreds of parachutes here.
Another interesting product that could be of interest is the Jolly logic chute release. This item lets you open your parachute at a lower altitude rather than at apogee. This means your rocket won't drift nearly as far on it's way down giving you much higher odds of recovery without too long a hike! You may want to couple this with a small drogue parachute and the main to be released at a lower altitude.
There are of course many more options, ideas and choices than this short list! You might want to add a payload section or electronics bay to your rocket.
If you've flown a few A-D motor model rockets and are looking for a new challenge, we would suggest picking something with a 29mm motor mount.
These rockets kits are generally a little bit higher quality than your basic A-D model rockets. The Estes Pro rockets, and rockets from LOC, Public misiles & Eggtimer rocketry are all great choices. You can browse the collection of 29mm model rocket kits here.
Rocket motors from E, F, G and higher will fly in these rockets.
You may also be interested in a cluster rocket. These rockets fire multiple motors all at once. You can usually connect all your igniters at once with decent success. Although you could also use Tape match and lightning sticks for reliable cluster ignition too. Check out our cluster rocket options here.
You could also move on to a multi-stage rocket as a new challenge. These fire one motor after the other as booster stage, and sustainer stage. Check out the multi stage rocket options on this page.
We have a wide range of options for schools and clubs. Model rocketry is a great learning experience, and it's pretty fun at the same time!
As a school you could try the UKROC rocketry competition for ages 11 to 18 which runs once a year. You can visit our UKROC page here which has a link to the official website as well.
As well as the UKROC competition we have a dedicated schools and clubs section here. You will find bulk packs of rockets that need construction as well as bulk packs of rocket motors too.
Rocketry is a very rewarding project, and falls firmly in the STEM education category. Your school absolutely can have an engaging experience in our field.
We offer incredibly easy payment by Invoice on NET-30 terms, as well as conventional methods by card, Paypal and BACS too. You can even checkout directly on the website to pay by NET-30 and your order will be dispatched straight away. (Only available for schools, colleges and universities).
