The Apogee X-15 was a labor of love from the team here at Apogee. To us, the X-15 represents some of the best applications of rocketry in the modern engineering world. It was a game changer, shattering records and opening up a whole new understanding of hypersonic travel and rocketry applications.

We've tried to replicate some of the greatness that the X-15 represents to us in this detailed model. It was painstakingly engineered over several iterations to stay true to the scale dimensions while still maintaining a stable flight profile. In this kit you will find the highest-quality components offered here at Apogee, incredibly detailed instructions, pristine water-slide decals, an ejection baffle to help protect the parachute from heat damage, and a display stand to show off your completed rocket. Why? Because it will surely become one of the best rockets in your collection.

This kit is a showstopper before it even touches the launch pad. The nostalgia we feel for the X-15 doesn't just stop with us, but is felt throughout our whole community. The X-15 was a marvel of its time, capturing the attention of the world over as it rocketed its way past a speed of Mach 6 (six times faster than the speed of sound). It even went high enough to kiss the edge of space where its wings became useless because there was no air flowing over them.

This kit comes with the custom alignment jigs you'll need to be sure the fins, vertical tail, and wings are all installed with precision. It includes both an elastic shock cord and a slightly longer kevlar shock cord for added protection against zippering to protect from impact damage.

The rocket is designed to fly on 29mm diameter high-thrust composite propellant rocket motors. It needs high thrust motors to get the rocket up to speed quickly. You'll find that this rocket is heavier than normal rockets of comparable size, because it needs a significant amount of nose mass to keep the model flying straight and stable.  Check out the recommended motor charts below on this page that will give you an idea of what this rocket can handle.

What makes this more challenging than some other rockets are the vacuum-form plastic fairings on the exterior of the aircraft. These require a bit more patience to work with, because you have to cut them from the sheet as part of the assembly process. There are no straight edges on them which would make them easier to cut.

This kit also requires an extreme attention to detail where the weight is concerned. Getting the stability right can be tricky, and due to the non-standard design of the fairings and canopy on the rocket. Those details cannot be run through RockSim. Having excessive adhesive or unplanned weight at the rear of the rocket could easily throw off the margin and end up with an unstable flight profile. As noted in the "Commonly Asked Question" section below, we do not recommend the use of a screw-on retainer on this rocket kit because of the excess weight it adds to the rear of the rocket.

This rocket is designed to fly on 29mm motors, but does have some options in the 24mm range should you want a little less impulse for your flying field. See the motor table on this page for our recommended motors for this kit

The X-15, due to it's scale design, has large, thin wings. Because they are thin, they aren't as stiff or durable as thicker fins. We had to use balsa for this design because of the CG/CP location issue. We originally tried other fin materials, but the excess weight made the rocket unstable. Just be aware that the fins are not bullet-proof, and you should use extra care when flying the rocket. A nice grass field is more forgiving on the fins than a hard dirt or concrete landing area.
