Eggtimer Apogee FAQ’s
This device runs on a 1S lipo battery with a JST connector, however please check polarity as not all batteries are connected the same way around. If you plug one in the wrong way it will damage the board. The JST batteries we sell from PKCELL are the correct polarity.
The Eggtimer Apogee is the easiest and least expensive deployment altimeter on the market. In a tiny 1.75” x .9” package that fits into a 24mm motor mount, the Apogee deploys your parachute at apogee and beeps out your altitude, with no programming of any kind. It has a built-in NAR/TRA-approved screw switch, and an on-board JST-PH battery connector for small 1S LiPo batteries. It’s the ideal companion for a Jolly Logic Chute Release™ because it does the things that the JLCR cannot… get the parachute out and tell you how high you went.
Not only is it easy to use, but it’s also easy to build. With almost all through-hole parts, it’s designed to be easily built by just about anyone.
Also available is a special 3D-printed Easy Mount for the Eggtimer Apogee (designed by Chris Bender of Lab Rat Rocketry), it makes it a snap to install an Apogee into most 38mm or larger nose cones. It can be easily interchanged from one rocket to another, and includes a built-in charge well and terminal screws. It’s designed to use a tiny 110 mAH 1S LiPo battery, which Eggtimer Rocketry will also be sourcing.
What does the Eggtimer Apogee do?
The Apogee deploys your parachute at apogee, and also beeps out your altitude after the flight.
Why do I need this when my motor already ejects the parachute?
Good question. Motor delays are either fixed to a certain number of seconds after burnout, or can be adjusted within a certain range by drilling out a bit of the delay grain material. The problem is that this is not an exact process… there is a 20% allowable delay in even the factory-supplied delay, so if you have a 10 second delay it could be a short as 8 seconds or as long as 12 seconds. 4 seconds is a lot of variance.
Another reason is that you may be flying a very light rocket with a large motor, and your rocket’s time-to-apogee significantly exceeds the maximum motor delay. If you keep the motor delay as-is, your parachute is going to come out early… robbing you of altitude, and possibly causing the dreaded “zipper” or a ripped parachute.
Finally, it’s a great companion for the Jolly Logic Chute Release(tm), because it does the two things that the JLCR cannot… get your parachute out and tell you how high you went.
How big does my rocket have to be to use the Eggtimer Apogee?
The Eggtimer Apogee is about 1.75″ x .9″, and will easily fit in a 24mm motor mount tube. If your rocket can take a big enough motor to need electronic deployment, then the Eggtimer Apogee will almost certainly fit in it. We’ve sized the Easy Mount body and the retaining ring to fit inside a standard 38mm coupler tube, but if you rocket is as small as 24mm you can still fit the Apogee board in without too much trouble.
Do I need a special “AV Bay”?
Not at all. The Apogee can easily be incorporated into the nose cone of most rockets, and if your nose cone is relatively flat on the bottom and/or uses a bulkplate (i.e. fiberglass nose cones) then it’s even easier with the Eggtimer Apogee Easy Mount. You basically drill a 1″ hole for the Easy Mount, two holes for the screws, and screw it in. Easy peasy.
What else do I need to use it?
You’ll need a battery, we sell a very small 1S 110 mAH LiPo battery that fits very neatly into the Easy Mount, but any 1S LiPo battery will do. We supply a JST-PH connector, which is the most common connector used for small LiPo’s.
You’ll also need some ematches, and the pyrotechnic powder. For ematches, we recommend the MJG Firewire ematches… they don’t require any special permits to use, and can be shipped non-hazmat. For the powder, you’ll normally just use the powder that’s already in your motor; just dump it out into a cup or small container, and load it into the charge well with the ematch. Pack the charge well with some “dog barf” cellulose insulation, tape it shut, and you’re ready to go. If you’re using the Eggtimer Apogee Easy Mount, there’s a step-by-step guide to prepping the charge well in the User’s Guide.
Can I use it for high-power flights?
Yes. The Eggtimer Apogee is rated for 60,000′, and is fully mach-immune. In fact, it’s an ideal drogue parachute backup device for small fast rockets, i.e. 54mm minimum-diameter on a K2050ST or similar high-thrust motors. The software is built on the many years of experience that Eggtimer Rocketry has with HPR flights with thousands of customers and many thousands of flights.
I heard about the recent Tripoli “switch rule”, do I need to add anything to the Apogee to make it compliant?
In most cases, no. The Apogee comes with a screw switch built-in, which completely disconnects the power. If you decide not to use it, you’ll have to come up with your own switch, of course.
Can I move the Easy Mount from one rocket to another?
Yes. There are two basic ways to use the Easy Mount, either by screwing the mount into the nose cone from the outside (typically used for plastic nose cones, using #4-1/2″ self-tapping screws) or by epoxying the Easy Mount Retainer Ring to the inside of your nose cone and screwing it in with the supplied #2-3/4″ machine screws (typically for nose cones that use a bulkplate that has to be glued in during assembly of your rocket). The body of the Easy mount stays the same, so all you need to do is to unscrew it from one rocket and screw it into the other with whatever screws are required.
About our Degree of Difficulty Scale…
We rate Degree of Difficulty from 1 to 5, based on how small the parts are, how many parts there are, how long it takes to build, and how critical to proper operation minor soldering mistakes would be. A kit rated 1 is all through-hole, and is relatively forgiving of less than perfect solder joints. A kit rated 5 has a lot of small 0805 surface mount parts, and has .050″ pitch IC’s. If you’ve never built a kit before we recommend that you stay with the lower numbered kits, once you have successfully built a few of them then you can tackle the 4’s and 5’s.

All items on our website shown as in stock, are in our warehouse ready to ship unless stated otherwise on the product page.
We aim to ship orders within 1 working day of ordering on your chosen shipping method.
We do not guarantee this however, especially at extremely busy times of the year. Therefore if you do require your order urgently, please drop us a email after you order to let us know.
Please note that you must use a courier option if your order contains rocket motors, you can not use the Royal Mail for orders with motors. The website should automatically disable the Royal Mail shipping option once these items are added to your cart. However in the case of a website mistake you will need to use the courier option.
Orders will ship on your chosen courier, all UK Mainland couriers we offer are a next day service. The couriers however do not offer us a guarantee on this, so we are unable to pass one along.
Over 95% of our orders do arrive next day as intended.
If you require Saturday delivery there is a Saturday delivery option on the checkout page. DHL do not offer Saturday delivery by default.
You can use the Royal Mail option for smaller items up to 2Kg in weight as long as they do not contain motors.
Please be aware if you require AM or Saturday delivery these orders may still take up to 1 working day to dispatch. We do, however, prioritise express orders for dispatch.
If an item was sent un-tracked the delivery date is agreed to be 2 (two) days after shipment.
Returned items should be undamaged and in a good condition suitable to be sold again. They need to arrive with us in this condition.
You must package the item well so that damage does not occur in transit, although you do not need to use the original packaging.
We will offer to replace the faulty or damaged item, or refund you in full at your preference.
In regards to missing parts of kits we reserve the right to replace the required parts rather than the entire kit.
If the item arrives damaged or faulty we will of course still offer a refund or replacement on custom orders.
If your item has been dispatched then we will need to investigate with our couriers before continuing with our refund process. This may take up to 14 working days to complete although is usually a far quicker process. We will always offer a full refund or replacement for lost items.
If you paid by BACS we will require your bank details to send a repayment via BACS.
BACS payments should usually arrive in your account the same day, however please allow up to 5 working days.
